Informing Democracy Condemns NC GOP’s Override of Anti-Democracy Election Board Bill

Today, Republican legislators overrode Governor Cooper’s veto of a bill that undermines fair elections in the state. Following the override, Informing Democracy Executive Director Jenna Lowenstein shared this statement:

“These political games have put voting rights and fair elections at risk yet again. By overriding this veto, these lawmakers are causing unneeded confusion in how elections are run. Their obvious attempt to insert themselves into local election administration is a threat to democracy—and it’s on all of us to call out these threats and demand accountability.”

Additional Background: Senate Bill 749 empowers the legislature, with its Republican supermajority, to appoint members of state and local election boards, stripping the governor and the state board members of their long-standing roles in these processes. It also requires an even number of Republicans and Democrats to serve on each board, increasing the potential for chaos and gridlock in the event of tied decisions that could hold up the administration of free and fair elections in the state.
